Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey, is a Eurasian country spanning the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia and Thrace (Rumelia) in southeastern Europe’s Balkan region. Turkey is bounded on the northwest by Bulgaria, on the west by Greece, on the northeast by Georgia, on the east by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, and on the southeast by Iraq and Syria.
To the south are the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus; to the west are the Aegean Sea and Archipelago, and to the north is the Black Sea. The Sea of Marmara and the Turkish Straits separate Anatolia and Thrace and are widely thought to delineate the border between Asia and Europe, making Turkey transcontinental.
Turkey’s culture combines a diverse and heterogeneous set of elements derived from Ottoman, European, and Middle Eastern traditions. This rich diversity is mainly due to Turkey’s former status as a multiethnic empire that, de facto, spanned three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa until the loss of Libya to the Kingdom of Italy in 1912.
Although Turkey is geographically located in a temperate zone, the varied nature of the landscape, particularly the presence of mountains that run parallel to the coasts, results in significant differences in climatic conditions from one region to the next. For example, while the coastal areas have milder climates, the inland Anatolia plateau has hot summers and cold winters with little rainfall.
Because of Turkey’s geographical conditions, one cannot speak of a general overall climate. The climate in Istanbul and the Marmara region is mild (winter 4 degrees Celsius and summer 27 degrees Celsius); however, temperatures can drop below zero in the winter. Western Anatolia (Aegean region) has a mild Mediterranean climate with average temperatures of 9 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius in summer. The same environment can be found along Anatolia’s southern coast (Mediterranean region).
